Back in the day I used to go digging with a guy we called Chapultepek, I remember in 2008 when he found 20 minty copies of Clarence Peters Quartet, this extremely obscure album recorded in France, he wasn't very into free jazz and has no info on this gem so he asked me to sell it on my site ...
According to Steve Potts, Clarence Peters was more an amateur than a professional musician, they recorded this session in one afternoon, he said his memory of the recording was hazy.
In 2013, Jazzman Gerald compiled Born & Shake on his famous Spiritual Jazz series (Volume IV - Americans in Europe) It's amazing but finally not really surprising how 13 years later, this gem has definitely gained the status of Holy Grail of French Private Jazz ! I'm really pleased to offer for sale this NM / NM copy.
Superb rarity with budget artwork, a trade mark to any good spiritual jazz record ! This french private press by unknown american drummer Clarence Peters sounds between spiritual jazz and free. Features the mighty Steve Potts on alto and soprano sax, french jazz legend Jean-Jacques Avenel on bass and Patrick Gauthier (Magma, Heldon, Weirdorje) another great name of french underground on piano and keyboard. Totally underrated with 4 long tracks : the deep and intense Born and Shake with Coltranesque solos by Potts, Black Meeting reminds me the space jazz of Sun Ra. Rhodes & piano, percussions, haunted voice, also some powerful shaking drums breaks solo on the title track. A fantastic forgotten piece of jazz that radiates a real Magnetic Atmospher.
Serious offers only !
